We should not ignore the potential of nuclear power, especially small modular reactors, which could play an important role in providing reliable, carbon-free energy for our economies.
— Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Prime Minister of Greece

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced yesterday that Greece will formally explore the role of nuclear energy in its power generation mix, speaking at the International Conference on Nuclear Energy in Paris.

The announcement marks a significant shift in Greek energy policy — and a direct reflection of years of sustained public engagement. Over the past two years, Deon Policy Institute has been at the center of this discussion, bringing advanced nuclear technologies into the national conversation through television, radio, print, and digital media. Deon's landmark white paper on nuclear energy in shipping — examining SMR applications in the maritime sector and their implications for Greece as a global shipping leader — helped shape the policy case ahead of the Prime Minister's announcement.

Commenting on the news, Georgios Laskaris, Nuclear Physicist and President of Deon Policy Institute, said:

"Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' announcement of a ministerial committee to examine the role of small modular reactors in Greece's energy mix marks an important strategic development for the country. In a period of geopolitical uncertainty and rising energy prices, nuclear energy can strengthen energy security, economic stability, and climate policy. The Deon Policy Institute has already helped bring this issue into the public debate and can contribute to Greece's informed preparation for a potential nuclear pathway."

Deon Policy Institute Executive Director and Environmental Engineer Afroditi Xydi reflected:

"The Prime Minister's announcement is proof that sustained public engagement and stakeholder education can shape policy and move national conversations forward. The establishment of a ministerial committee is a critical first step, and Deon Policy Institute stands ready to support Greece through what will be a defining process for the country's energy independence and long-term climate security."

Deon Policy Institute will continue contributing to this discussion through data-driven, evidence-based research, stakeholder engagement, and international collaboration, ensuring Greece's nuclear exploration is grounded in rigorous analysis and aligned with the country's long-term priorities.
